Clothing and other items: labelling

I was looking at the list of clothing in the 1963/1964 Trafalgar prospectus. The boarder’s outfit clearly states that every article must be plainly marked with owner’s name.

The notice on Camp Ouareau’s web site states plainly - all articles must be labelled or marked. No trunk or luggage over 15” - they must fit under the camp bed. I do remember that note from my time at camp - I wonder if they are the same beds.

A suggested extra - stuffed animals can go to camp. I have photographic proof that Ruthie Rabbit went to both Traf and Camp Ouareau.

At camp no electronic devices are welcomed. At Traf I had a small radio and also a record player - that certainly dates my time there!

At Greenbelt there are many horses and many horsy items all around. Lockers and brackets for holding saddles are well labelled. Even so things sometimes go missing but they most usually turn up again soon and hopefully in good condition.
Abracadabra has some of her items labelled - the clips to hold her winter blanket, her warm weather blanket and her halter. It is quite a safe place to keep stuff even though there are lots of kids around.

What colour is my wardrobe?

Now that I have put away my summer clothes I have been reacquainting myself with my winter ones.

When I look at the range of colours in my cupboard there are pinks and blues and purples and reds and some green and gray.

There is no brown or orange or yellow to be seen.

Some time in the past I had an orange coat and it did not seem to be right for me. About that time I had my colours done. I still have the little folder with appropriate colours for me.

Guess what - they are pink and blue and purple and red and green and gray.

What colour is your favourite?

As I put on a new winter top I realized that I was following in a long tradition. It was turquoise.

That is my favourite colour and it has been for a long time.

I have had turquoise dresses and turquoise tops and turquoise shorts and a lovely silk turquoise blouse.

I have presently besides this top a summer t-shirt and a very old summer t-shirt that I now wear to the barn. It was given to me in 1990 for volunteering at a Canadian Library Association Conference so I have had it a very long time.

Hold onto your hat

My grandfather wore a cap like this. He had to be reminded sometimes to take it off when he came inside.

My dad had quite a small sized head. When he picked up someone else’s hat by mistake he knew about it right away - it was way down over his ears!!

Get your hat…the line in a movie I was watching. That dates the movie because men do not wear hats any more only those baseball type caps that are not appealing to me at all.

There was an urban legend that JFK did not wear a hat to his inauguration and therefore the wearing of hats by men took a steady decline. This fun website refutes this popular myth.

Clothes

I was thinking of clothes as I gave away with some reluctance a nice top that had belonged to my mom. It was turquoise which is my favourite colour. Unfortunately it was too small and I could not see myself fitting into it any time soon.

When my mom was moving out of her house in Lachute I helped to go through her clothes. There were some that she would not wear again - like a wool suit.

When she was in the convalescent home and then the retirement home and then the nursing home, she wore comfortable pants and tops.

I found it a difficult trip to the Salvation Army thrift store to give away her clothes after she died.

I did keep a few things - a couple of nice jackets that she made. One in particular was quite complicated with a lining. I feel close to her when I wear the cozy dressing gown that I gave her some years ago.

I find that since I retired I am wearing more comfortable clothes. Even when dressing up I am wearing pants and a nice top.
