Online information

So I was looking for some information about one of my favourite mystery series that is from the UK and then show on my local PBS station. I found some information that the new series will be shown in the fall. Then I checked out what was on Youtube and there were all the episodes. I watched them all and they were very good. I also found out that there is a 6th season of the series which will be made.

I have recently acquired a drug card with my health plan. The receipt from the pharmacy and the account information available online was somewhat confusing. I will have to talk to someone on the telephone.

I was trying to figure out what I have been doing with my new cell phone. Finally I figured out how to find this information on my account. I do not use the phone too often but I usually take it with me now when I go out.

When I mailed a parcel today I got the receipt with the tracking number for online updates about the parcel’s status. Now I can see when the parcel has arrived at its destination. The mail service in Canada was not so available in the recent past with rotating strikes and then a lockout by Canada Post.

Then there is another mystery series that I like. It is filmed in Toronto. I wanted to know some more about it. Sure enough there is a Facebook page. I did sign up for it - I like it - in Facebook terms.

Another television note - my local PBS station is having some technical difficulties. One of the programs I wanted to see last night is available on Youtube. I will watch it soon.

So how would I manage my life if I did not have a computer and this online access to all this information?

Facebook again - friends and groups

“I am trying to be sociable as well. A friend’s invitation to a Facebook group does not quite do it for me. December 2010”

I must admit that I stay signed on to my Facebook page. My generation is not so much into sharing there but a couple of my younger friends do it more easily.

It is an easy way to connect with a few friends at once - as long as it is not too personal. Email is better for that.

So I went through my Facebook pages to see how I connected with different friends and groups.

Looking at my list of Facebook friends there are some who post regularly and I always read what they have to say and sometimes respond.

Most of my friends there have a church connection and then a few horsy ones.

The groups I am part of are church and horsy and other interests such as my three favourite television networks - TV Ontario, Vision TV and WPBS. Then add a few places from my past - cursillo and Trafalgar and Camp Ouareau.

Pictures and funny stories are nice to share as well.

Upcoming events and who may be there to share with.

*****

Staying connected is what it is all about.

The people I stay connected with are mostly not on Facebook. That is my generation and how we share.

So who is on my to do list to talk with on the phone and maybe meet up with?

Facebook - a most interesting perusal

So on my visit to the site yesterday I found out all kinds of interesting information about friends. I wrote a few messages and commented on various pictures.

*****

Anglican deacon (soon to be priested) - writing about prayer.

Dog owner - cold and short walks with her.

Celebrating with her husband.

Celebrating a computer that now works.

What to do about a cat in distress?

What about those bunnies in the backyard - is it not too cold for them?

Updated home town to warmer climates.

Cold with the horse - 2 different friends.

Celebrating with her husband - another friend.

Celebrating as new member of the Order of Ontario.

*****

So Facebook can be fun and a good way to find out what your friends are up to.

Electronic devices again

My sister has a notebook as well as a laptop.

A friend has something smaller than a notebook - a tablet I think it is called.

Our parish priest has an electronic device that takes pictures. So does our new and young Christian education coordinator. She uploads new videos to the church’s Youtube page.

Some folks on the Weight Watchers Nifty Fifties Board say how much they like their Kindle for reading books.

Am I behind the times or what? My computer is 4 years old. It does all that I want it to do.

What do I need an new electronic device for? When would I use a cell phone?

What do I want to be doing that I am not doing now?

I am managing quite fine as I am - thank you very much.

Rogers this and Rogers that

My television service and digital box are Rogers. My cable television has been for a long time.

Some time ago when I was walking in my neighbourhood I happened to see a box - it said Skyline Cablevision. When I searched the name in Google I found a reference to a Facebook page for a group of former employees of the company. The old connected with the new.

There is a Rogers Centre in Toronto. It is very close to where the G20 Summit is being held next week.

Anyway my ramblings started because my Rogers digital box was not working. I could not see too far into the future to record programs. I reset my digital box and all is well for now.

I also received a bill in my email for my Rogers television and Internet service. Something was a little strange. I have to investigate further - online and maybe by telephone.

Rogers home phone - no thanks - I will stay with Bell.

Keeping up to date

“I also have online friends: people I've never met in real life, but who offer support and friendship all the same. I don't think of them in the same way as my real life friends, but I value them anyway.”

I read this recently and it made me think about how I keep in touch with folks.

Email is good and sometimes sending a group email is useful like when I sent one entitled - The new horse. It is a good way to keep in touch with friends that I do not see often.

The phone is still a great invention but no cell phone in my household.

Meeting in person is good. It is always good to have a meal with a friend. I did that over Christmas.

I do read a couple of message boards but I do not share too much. It seems like a lot of effort to get involved with people in that way. I would rather be keeping in touch in the real world.

I like to read my friends Facebook entries to see what they are up to. When they are just playing online games I am not so interested.

I do like to visit the web sites of places that I know. It is also good when they are up to date. I often go to the Web site for St. John’s, St Andrew’s in Lachute, and SSJD.

From friends

I have friends who regularly send me silly emails and nice Powerpoint presentations. These second often have music with them.

I was just watching one about Vietnam - the people going about their daily lives and the scenery and the rivers, etc. My friend said it would be relaxing and exotic and it was - not what one first thinks about when one thinks about Vietnam. Places and people do heal. Life goes on.

The silly emails just give me a chuckle. That is alright too.

Technology changing again and again

I was talking with a friend recently about televisions and computers. She was saying - I missed that interesting program. I asked about a VCR or other recording device. She said it was a new one and she would have to read the manual to learn how to program it.

She was also concerned about an upcoming change of computer program at her workplace.

I can certainly understand her unease about the need to keep up with new technology. At work it happened to me all the time.

I was recently reminded of some work related computer programs. I had occasion to open a large Excel file. I had prepared and worked on such files towards the end of my career.

My need for complicated programs and files is much less than before. Recently I have been using Blogger and Google Docs and I seem to manage to do what I want to do. I am not so interested in more complicated applications.

Episcopal Church General Convention

When the Lambeth Conference was held last year I read several blogs about the event as it unfolded. This time I wanted some different information.

The main web site from the Convention from the Church has only text documents - sort of boring. There is a media hub with on demand and live video and links to other sources - including blogs.

I tried searching Twitter for ECGC - which is the tag that I found referenced somewhere else.

The Twitter postings are very short - picture of the poster; name of the poster; short text; link to a blog entry.

Do I learn about what is happening at the Convention as it happens?
Am I learning something about Twitter?
I think - yes in both cases.

If I had wanted to I could have shared in a virtual prayer service in Second Life for the Convention. That is a whole different world.

Social networking pt. 2

I was reading, as I often do, my RSS feeds. There were a couple about social networking. There are suggested changes to the UK primary school curriculum so that the kids learn about these tools. The federal government in the US is making it easier for their own workers to use sites like Youtube. There is a lot going on out there.

The sisters at the convent (SSJD) have a Facebook account and I see that some individual sisters also have Facebook accounts. There are pictures now of each one of the sisters which is nice. I would rather be friends with them in person which I am.

Youtube is still one of my favourite sites for just stopping by. Before too long I will be looking for Easter music - but as Esther Bunny says - that is another story (or another posting).

I have lots of ideas about writing for this blog but in the last while I have not been able to make the time to do this. Real life has taken over and my various volunteer activities. Perhaps I could get Abracadabra to write her own postings. She does have lots of good ideas.

Playing on the computer

As I was looking back at old Christmas letters that I had written I realized that it was in 2000 that I first bought a computer. I had been using them at work for many years before that.

It is very easy to spend time playing with different applications. I was thinking particularly of pictures this time.

On Sunday morning I went looking for pictures of Lachute. Of course I found some and I tried to remember what all the places were. There were some familiar spots - St. Julien’s Church, the golf club, the train station.

Then I realized that Kathi had taken some very nice pictures of the area near Princess Street. I think these are in a photo album somewhere in my basement.

I was also trying to figure out how to use pictures on my blog and my Facebook account. One I did put on Facebook was admired. It was of Abra.

I have been increasing my volunteer involvements in the last while. I will give you access to this online list; here is how you update this information. Every application is different but at least I feel comfortable enough online to try different things.

Social networking

Just after I retired last fall I took a very interesting course on Social Networking. It was interesting to me personally even though the other folks in the course were talking about how they might apply various tools at work.

Blogs of course - or else I would not be writing this. I also like to read some regularly. I find it fun to read a blog by someone I know in real life - or should I be saying IRL. There are a number that share their spiritual life and are much a source of encouragement. Another one that is lots of fun is written by a donkey friend. I do not think Abra will get her own blog any time soon but she may write a few postings on mine. Her fan club needs to keep up with her activities!

I use Google Reader for my RSS feeds. The topics I like are church and horse and food and local Ottawa related.

I go to Youtube for entertainment for worship music, more traditional and classical music, horses, cartoons. When I hear about some music or song I often find it there.

I have been reading and posting at special message boards for a long time. I shared a lot with folks on the Touched By an Angel Message Board that is now defunct. I do share some on the Weight Watchers Nifty 50s Board. I read the Equestrian Management Group forums. I have not got into sharing there yet but I may do so soon.

Occasionally I receive an email inviting me to be friends with someone on Facebook. I do not spend a lot of time there. My friends are some folks that I know IRL and also friends I have met online.

It is very interesting to see how folks use all these applications. I find that realistically I only have time to keep up with a couple and that is enough for me. I do not think I will be joining the Anglican community at Second Life any time soon. I like the idea that the course leader suggested for the participants to share what applications they had been using.
