Eat pray love

I seldom order a movie on my television. This title looked to be interesting so I watched it recently.

It was nicely done. It was about one woman’s journey to find herself. She went to Rome to eat, to India to pray and to Bali to love.

There were some quotes from the movie that spoke to me.

*****

I do not see myself in my life.

I do not know how to be here.

Maybe my life was not chaotic, the world is.

When going from Rome to India - I want some peace.

The meditation room is within.

So miss me - love light whenever you think of me.

God dwells within you as me.

High Society

This was such a nice movie that I watched thanks to my local PBS station.

All kinds of great actors in it - Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly.

The singing was quite nice of course.

I did go and look up some of the trivia about the movie on IMDB.

The engagement ring Grace was wearing was her real engagement ring. This was her last movie before getting married to Prince Ranier of Monaco. A quote from Alfred Hitchcock "very happy that Grace has found herself such a good part."

According to Wikipedia, they met at the Cannes Film Festival. He went to America and was looking for a wife. “Rainier met Kelly and her family, and after three days, the prince proposed.” She accepted and went on to her life as a princess instead of a movie star. She died tragically at the age of 52 after having a stroke when driving her car.

World War 2 movies

I continue to be quite impressed by the Rogers DVD rental service. There is all kinds of good stuff there. I do like the series but I have seen a number of good movies.

Miracle at Midnight with Mia Farrow. I found it because Patrick Malahide (Inspector Alleyn series) is in it. It tells a story of a family in Denmark who help their Jewish neighbours.

Mrs Henderson Presents with Judi Dench. The show must go on. It takes place at the start of the war in London with a theatre and its daring presentations. There is a moving scene where she flies over to France to visit her husband’s grave from World War 1. She says I do not think I will be back for a while. The next scene is a news clip about France being invaded.

I cannot help thinking that my mom would have also enjoyed the second one.

Airports

Folks in Ottawa who want to see President Obama tomorrow will not be able to see him at the airport. He will not even see the newly renovated terminal.

On my trip to and from Montreal last fall the bus stopped at the Dorval Airport - now known as the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

On my first trip to England in the fall of 1975 we left from Dorval. There was some possibility that we would return to Mirabel Airport but it was not open when we returned.

Mirabel Airport was close by where my mom lived in Lachute. You could hear the planes flying over the house.

I did fly out of there on another trip - to England and France. They had some interesting shuttles which took you out to your plane. I was watching a movie where the shuttles looked to be quite familiar. Sure enough in the credits, the movie was filmed there.

Now the airport looks to be very lonely. What a waste! It is easy to find some sad looking pictures on the Internet.

Shipwrecks

I was watching Midsomer Murders - one of my favourite British mystery murder series. It has been playing for a long time on TV Ontario. There was a shipwreck and the Admiralty was mentioned as being involved in all British shipwrecks.

I do remember being in Bermuda and seeing a map with identified shipwrecks.

Then there is Sable Island off the coast of Nova Scotia where there were many shipwrecks. Some ponies live there (technically they are horses) and if you want to check on their situation - they are protected by Canadian law. You cannot disturb them. Prime Minister Diefenbaker was involved.

Then of course there is the most famous shipwreck - the Titanic. I have watched many times “A Night to Remember.” Many years later I watched the new Titanic movie on TV - an American romantic film starring Kate Winslet. I was not too impressed and I wondered about what all the hoopla was about.

I came across recently the hymn that was played when the ship was sinking. It is apocryphal that is was played then.
