Jean Vanier and Henri Nouwen

Jean Vanier is a great Canadian and an advocate for those who are disabled. Some years ago when I was at university in Toronto I went to hear him speak. The auditorium was packed.

He speaks from his heart.

There were also a series of videos that were shown on Vision TV. It was good to hear him speak.

A former work colleague has a severely handicapped son. I see from a distance how much love and care and time and energy goes into taking care of him. He is a teenager now.

Henri Nouwen - that great Christian writer - spent his last few years at a l’Arche community (founded by Jean Vanier) near Toronto.

I have read many of Nouwen’s books and find them to be very refreshing and open about his faith and his life. I believer Hilary Clinton mentioned that she likes his writings too.

A good friend of mine, now living in Saskatchewan, worked for a couple of years at the original L'Arche community in Trosly-Breuil, France in the 1970s. He took me to visit at L'Arche Ottawa where I saw some of the good work being done.
