Places: Lachute

So last Sunday I took a trip to Lachute and specifically to visit St. Simeon’s Anglican Church where I went to many services with my mom. The church looks very much the same.

It was the Sunday for the Advent Carol service with lessons. The church was nicely decorated. Also it was a time to dedicate a plaque on the memorial board for my mom. I met up with folks that I knew and we had a chance to chat over coffee and other goodies after the service.

I drove by the house on Princess Street - the house that was part of my life for 50 years.

I went to Tim Horton’s for a coffee and muffin. My mom and I had gone there often in her later years in Lachute. My grandfather had lived up the road. The cemetery where my mom and dad and other family members are buried is up the road as well.

I drove by the train station that has been closed for many years now. The passenger train from Montreal to Ottawa that stopped in Lachute was discontinued on November 15 1981. My mom and Kathi and I often took train trips to Montreal to go shopping at Eaton’s, Morgan’s (later the Bay) and Simpson’s.

The large Catholic Church - St. Julien - in the former neighbourhood has been torn down. Now there are large trucks from the business across the road parked there. It looks sort of sad. The church stood empty for over 10 years.

The school I attended which was Lachute High School and now is Lachute Elementary School looks very much the same. Close by the school is the Curling Club where my mom spent many happy hours curling and socializing. When she finally retired from curling they gave her an honourary membership.

I drove on the new section of Highway 50. This section has been under construction for many years. It is only 2 lanes instead of 4.

So some things in Lachute are the same and some are different but is that not the case with everything in life?
