Women's retreat

I recently prepared to go to a church retreat with about 30 other women. These were some of my thoughts before going.

It should be lots of fun. I have to drive some folks and I hope the traffic going out of the city is not too bad. The retreat centre is very nice and in a nice location.

There will be an opportunity for some early morning exercise. Will that compensate for the good meals that we will have? I see that a wine and cheese event is on for the evening.

I will be back home on Saturday evening at which time I expect I will be tired and ready for an early bedtime.

So on the Sunday morning I reflected on what had happened.

It was good to be in my own bed and I did sleep much better than my 1 night away.

So the retreat was great. I had one passenger to take with me – my friend with cancer. She is currently waiting for test results. It was good to travel with her – I have known her for a long time.

The weather was not at all agreable for walking outside – we had the tail end of Hurricance Gustav. As someone said it could have been much worse and then you stopped to think about the folks in places like Haiti where they have so little to start with. I did not do any walking outside.

I did not go to the session about the weight loss journey. I went instead to a session with our new priest who asked us all a question – why did you come to the church and what made you stary? It was a very interesting discussion.

The other session I attended was on Stories – our own stories and what we remember about a familiar story – in this case the Wizard of Oz. It was a lot of fun. I remembered some of the songs – but only the first few lines.

I got to spend time with folks I know well, some I got to know a bit better and others I met for the first time. This is the 4th year for this women's retreat and it was my first year attending. For the other years I was taking care of my mom and getting ready to retire so I was not able to be there.

I think I did alright with my eating. At the wine and cheese reception I did have wine – 1 small glass and some lovely cheese – but I did eat quite a few veggies and no crackers. The last meal was spaghetti and salad and fruit crumble. I had 2 helpings of salad as I know the heavy spaghetti at that time of day was not what I wanted to eat. I did have some chesse and fruit when I got home.
